Role profile

We are currently looking for creatives who can bring design to life for our audiences through developing and delivering practical design-related workshops, projects, and tours, both on and off site.  We work with all audiences and age groups: from families, schools, and young people, to students, those working in the creative industries and the wider local community.  Inclusivity is central to our approach; we deliver activities with and for students, young people, families, people with disabilities from a diverse range of backgrounds.

  • Public Liability Insurance certificate (£1Million) or willingness to acquire one

  • Active PVG member or willingness to join

Duties and Responsibilities

Our programme is delivered by a freelance team of talented designers and creatives, working across disciplines: from fashion and illustration to video games, architecture, engineering, sound, ecological, and product design. Designers with experience in the double diamond method and co-design are also encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading tours and workshops (of all ages)

  • Maintaining Learning spaces and resources

  • Developing content for Learning experiences, including:

    • Guiding design-based discussions and activities to achieve objectives

    • Encouraging participation in design-thinking and collaboration among participants

    • Managing time effectively and keeping the workshops/tours/activities on track

    • Presenting information and materials in a clear and engaging manner

    • Adapting design workshops and activity content to suit the specific audience and objectives

    • Creating an inclusive learning environment designed to empower participants with design skills

    • Providing feedback and support to participants and V&A Learning team

Person specification

Essential

We are looking for people who:

  • Are passionate about design

  • Can demonstrate a strong creative practice with a design approach

  • Can apply co-design and other collaborative design practices

  • Are confident and comfortable communicators

  • Have strong facilitation and presentation skills

  • Can apply educational/pedagogical strategies to design

  • Can deliver learning experiences for all ages

  • Can work independently/collaboratively, incorporating feedback into practice

  • Can adapt to different audiences, including people from a diverse range of backgrounds, learning styles, abilities and ages

Our busy programme is delivered all year round across seven days, so we are looking to engage designers who are readily available.  There will be a period of familiarisation, and induction before you will be expected to deliver the programme. Ongoing observation and support is provided from the Learning team, and contracts will be reviewed every 24 months.

This is a freelance position, working a variety of hours per month of your chosing, you will be working from our museum in Dundee. As a Freelancer you will be considered self employed and will be responsible for your own tax and national insurance contributions. It is preferred that you live within reasonable commuting distance or live within Tayside area.
