Role profile

This role is a one-year internship for an Abertay University graduate, embedded within V&A Dundee's Learning department. This is an exciting opportunity to develop professional experience in museum learning and public programme production, with a specialist focus on game design and game lab experiences both analogue and digital.

The post holder will work collaboratively across all areas of the Learning department, supporting and contributing to the learning programme production (serving families, communities, schools and young people) bringing a game design lens to public engagement, educational activity, and participatory projects.

They will both produce their own game design-themed programme and act as an internal advisor and consultant to colleagues seeking to develop game lab and game design experiences at the museum. There is an opportunity to collaborate with the project team developing our Capital Project - VAD2028 - with a view to contributing to game development in the new Scottish Design Galleries. As a member of the Learning team, the Game Design Assistant Learning Producer contributes ideas to the museum's programme, supports a collegiate working environment and liaises with internal departments and external partners, including Abertay University, as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Cross-departmental collaboration

  • Work in close collaboration with the Families Producer, Communities Producer, Schools team (including Learning Facilitator and Schools Development Officer), and Young People's Producer to embed game design and game lab approaches across the Learning department's public programme.

  • Act as an internal advisor and consultant to all areas of the Learning team, supporting colleagues in developing and delivering game design and game lab experiences that are appropriate to their respective audiences.

  • Contribute actively to departmental planning meetings, sharing ideas and expertise in game design to enrich the wider programme.

Programme production

  • Plan, develop, and deliver a game design-themed public programme in collaboration with colleagues across the Learning department, including educational, analogue, and digital game design activities for a broad range of audiences.

  • Produce and coordinate game design events and activities that are accessible, participatory and engaging for public audiences, including families, schools, young people, and community groups.

  • Develop and create learning resources to support game design programming, for both in-person and digital delivery.

  • Manage socially engaged events and activities relating to the game design programme, including liaising with stakeholders, coordinating contributors, and collaborating with the wider team on delivery.

  • Lead and develop tours of permanent and temporary exhibitions with a focus on game design in the larger context of a design museum and history of Scottish design.

Game lab and game design experiences

  • Advise and consult with colleagues across all areas of the Learning department on best practice in creating game lab and game design experiences at V&A Dundee, ensuring these are thoughtfully integrated into different programme strands.

  • Support the development of the museum's game design offer, helping to ensure it is relevant, dynamic, and accessible to a wide range of visitors and participants.

  • Keep up to date with developments in the game design sector and bring fresh thinking and emerging approaches to the team.

Administration and evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate game design programming to ensure it continues to meet participant and audience needs effectively.

  • Undertake administration relating to the post, including compiling reports and proposals, statistics and KPIs, administering budgets, purchase orders, invoices, event schedules, and risk assessments.

  • Work closely with museum colleagues to contribute to reports and proposals as required.

General

Person specification

Essential

  • A graduate of Abertay University within the past 3 years (required for this internship role).

  • Experience of or enthusiasm for producing events, workshops, or educational activities.

  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for game design, including analogue and/or digital game design, and an understanding of its educational and creative potential.

  • Interest in museums, galleries, or cultural organisations and their role in public engagement and learning.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and supportively across different teams and programme areas.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present and explain game design concepts to a range of audiences.

  • Creativity and initiative, with the ability to develop original programme ideas and activities.

  • Good organisational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Excellent IT skills and confidence with digital platforms.

  • Ability to work independently and creatively as part of a team.

  • Commitment to inclusion and accessibility in cultural programming.

Desirable

  • Experience of facilitating educational game design workshops or game lab activities for young people and general public.

  • Familiarity with museum or gallery learning practice.

  • Experience of producing game related content for digital platforms or social media.

  • Knowledge of or interest in design more broadly, and in the mission and vision of V&A Dundee.

  • Connection to local and wider gaming communities.

Deadline for applications: no later than 17.00, 14th August 2026. Interviews will be held on 19th and 20th August.

This is a full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week working in a hybrid flexible environment with a mixture of home working and working from our museum in Dundee. The role may also require flexiblity with working evenings, weekends and holiday periods as the learning programmes demand and when required. This will be agreed in advance.
